The Sentinel
Trenton, NJ • 1880–1882
Trenton's first Black newspaper, founded by R. Henri Herbert. A pioneering voice in the post-Reconstruction era, published weekly at 4 North Broad Street. Merged with the Trenton Herald in 1883.
New Jersey Trumpet
Jersey City / Newark • 1887–1897
Founded by William Murrell, this weekly advocated for civil rights, economic advancement, and political participation during rapid urban growth and discrimination.
The Echo
Long Branch / Red Bank • 1904–1943
"The oldest colored paper in New Jersey." Served the Jersey Shore's Black communities for nearly four decades during the Jim Crow era.
New Jersey Guardian
Newark, NJ • 1934–1942
"Voice of the Colored People." Represented Newark's Black community during the Great Depression and early World War II, edited by F. R. Clark.
NJ Afro-American
Newark, NJ • 1941–Present
The longest-running Black newspaper in New Jersey, operating continuously for over 80 years. A major voice during the Civil Rights era.
